The crowning achievement of the Lopez-Cobos recording (Rachmaninoff Symphony No 2) was Richard Hawley's gorgeous clarinet solo at the beginning of (movement) III. It is red meat for any good clarinetist, but rarely have I heard it played with such a combination of expression and tonal beauty, as if expelled in a single 3-minute long breath. Mr. Hawley has repeated his achievement here (Järvi recording). Topping oneself-or at least matching one's earlier achievement- an be extremely stressfull, but if it was, we don't hear it.
